At Hinckley Academy and John Cleveland Sixth form Centre we have a proud and illustrious sporting history with many students and ex-students from both JCC and Mount Grace representing County, Regional and even National teams. To name a few Graham Rowntree, Dean Richards, Sam Vesty, Ollie Smith all representing England and the British Lions at Rugby Union. David Eaton Great Britain Gymnast. Julia Sawkins and Emily Cotterill both representing National Teams at Hockey. The success hasn’t stopped there and more recent students with representative honours include Manu Tualagi, Ryan Bower and Vicky Fleetwood who have all competed as part of the England rugby squad. Manu was also part of the last British and Irish Lions team. To fixtures against other schools across all sports
The department has a wealth of experience in terms of the staff who deliver both curricular and extra curricular activities for the students. Staff from other departments within the school volunteer to run clubs after school which adds to the activities which we can currently offer. Some of the clubs that have been on offer this year are; Kayaking, Kick Boxing, Rugby, Football, Basketball, Netball, Hockey, Athletics, Badminton, Tennis, Volleyball, Rounders and Cricket.
Along with its proud sporting tradition the department strives to cater for all levels of involvement within sport and there have been several schemes which have been designed to increase participation for all students. Through the curriculum we offer a wide range of sporting opportunities including; Football, Rugby, Basketball, Hockey, Ultimate Frisbee, Golf, Trampolining, Dance, Gymnastics, Athletics, Tennis, Cricket, Rounders. As well as offering a breadth of activity we also look to develop leadership and officiating skills and students can achieve a sports leaders award in years 11 and 13. To supplement the PE curriculum a wide variety of extra-curricular activities are offered including intra & inter-school fixtures and Area/County competitions, as well as other outdoor pursuits. The past few years has seen Mount Grace and JCC teams achieve unprecedented success in a wide range of sports including Football, Rugby, Basketball, Hockey, Netball, Cricket and Athletics. The Hinckley Academy and John Cleveland Sixth form Centre actively encourages pupils to join local sports clubs and has close links with several clubs.
The department has access to a wealth of facilities including; 4 rugby pitches, 3 football pitches, sports hall, gym, four tennis courts, swimming pool and the sand based astro pitch. Recent refurbishment of the changing rooms has resulted in gym style facilities with underfloor heating, pay-as-you-go lockers, hair dryers, hair straighteners and 52inch plasma screens.
