Is this course right for you?
Most jobs in the modern world require some use of IT, and a formal IT qualification improves the chances of getting a job. Additionally, IT skills will help you through your studies at A level and degree level regardless of subjects chosen. This course aims to expand your capability in IT. Not focusing on particular software but rather developing a broad range of skills and general IT confidence.
You will have a real interest in IT and its uses in the modern world and you will quickly get into the working of personal computers and should have a desire to understand how computers work and may be considering a career in the IT industry.
What does the course involve?
The course is based on the Level 1/2 Cambridge National Certificate in ICT and is specifically designed to appeal to you if you want to gain a general IT qualification focused more on the creative side.
At the beginning of the course you will be introduced to the concepts of project management and how this applies to real world situations in both IT and other industries. This will then be applied across several scenarios allowing you to put into practice your learning while you develop skills in web development, data management and presentation. You will complete a board set coursework task in year 11 using these skills and this will contribute 50% of the marks for your final results.
What about coursework and external assessments?
Coursework involves solving a board set task using the skills you have been taught in years 10 and 11. You will investigate, plan and develop a solution to the problem, evaluating each stage and the final results. Software used for this may be varied and students get to choose the approach they wish to take to create their final solution. This is coursework not controlled assessment and takes approximately 20 hours.
Coursework contributes 50% towards your final result, external assessment contributes 50%.
Progression opportunities (Sixth Form and beyond)
This course will give you the background needed to study an IT qualification at Level 3 at John Cleveland Sixth Form or other providers. In addition, you will have developed the flexibility and skills required to support your work in lots of different areas, for example, in graphics, business and the media. Study opportunities and careers using IT continue to develop in the modern economy.
